Appel à communication “Literary Second Cities”

Literary Second Cities
Åbo Akademi University, Turku, Finland – 20–21 August 2015
Deadline for proposals: 15 March 2015

The Second International Conference of the Helsinki Literature and the City Network (HLCN)

The conference ‘Literary Second Cities’ invites papers on new approaches to the study of literary cities, smaller cities, and cities or portions of cities judged secondary or subordinate in any historical period or part of the world. See attachment or link below for the conference abstract. The deadline for the call for papers is 15 March 2015. The language of the conference is English.
Please send proposals (length approximately 300 words) to <secondcities@abo.fi>.

The keynote speakers are Professor Marc Brosseau, University of Ottawa, and Professor Bart Keunen, University of Ghent. Professor Brosseau has written extensively on literary geographies. He is the author of Des romans-géographes (Paris, 1996). His most recent publications in English include the entry on ‘Literature’ in the International Encyclopedia of Human Geography (2009) and work on the literary geographies of Toronto, as well as on the operation of spatial traps in the fiction of Charles Bukowski. Professor Keunen is an internationally-renowned expert on literary urban studies and the head of the Ghent Urban Studies Team. Among his latest publications are journal articles and book chapters on landscape, narration and contemporary urban design in various settings, and the monographTime and Narration: Chronotopes in Western Narrative Culture (Northwestern University Press, 2011).

Papers on subjects including, but not limited to, the following themes are welcome:
o Literature defining the second city and which cities are to be understood as secondary
o The literature of provincial cities and those which are distant from other urban centres or from today’s globalised megacities
o The literature of cities and city districts that can be understood as shadow partners to major cities: the Left Bank of Paris; South London; Oakland to San Francisco; Salford to Manchester.
o Scaling the city: comparisons between larger and smaller cities
o Scaling the city: shifts between small-scale, localised views and overall perspectives
o Scaling the city: topographic and synoptic views of cities in the light of work by Michel de Certeau, Andreas Huyssen and other theorists
o Second cities in pre-modern literature
o Second cities in African, Asian and Latin-American literatures
o Literature defining the second city and which cities are to be understood as secondary
o Regional urban literatures
o Modes of definition of non-metropolitan or non-primary cities, for example Chicago or Birmingham as working city; Liverpool or Glasgow as primary port of the British Empire
o Former capitals and declined or marginalized cities
o Mobilities (spatial, identity-related) and secondary cities
o Specialized cities (their function deriving from e.g. tourism, a harbour or airport, religion)

Particular sessions on urban literature and scale, otherness and the city ‘second to itself’, Nordic second cities and modernism and literary second cities have already been proposed, and further sessions will be organized on the basis of the final applications.

During the conference, a round table discussion will be held to discuss the development of the network and the possibilities for further cooperation between international scholars in the field of urban literary studies. A peer-reviewed publication on the basis of selected conference papers is planned.

1.    Perspective géographique et interdisciplinaire du fait littéraire (imaginaire et récit de voyage, etc.) ;

2.    Caractérisation du géographe-écrivain et écrivains intéressés par le fait géographique;

3.    Jules Verne : textes, territoires et technologies ;

4.    Mise en fiction des lieux ;

Representations of Rurality in Crime Fiction and Media Culture” , Belfast, 15-16 juin, 2015)

Appel à communication

Representations of Rurality in Crime Fiction and Media Culture”

Queen’s University Belfast, June 15-16, 2015

The two day Symposium in June is supported by the Institute for Collaborative Research in the Humanities at Queen’s University and its 2014/15 theme of ‘Creativity in Imagined and Material Worlds’. It will bring together studies in crime fiction and media culture looking at a variety of outlets such as fiction, film, television, comics, games and many others with the concept of ‘rurality’. Here interdisciplinary papers are welcomed, but not contained to, Anthropology, Modern Languages, English, Film and Media Studies, History, Cultural Studies, Historical/Cultural Geography, Sociology, Spatial Planning. By bringing together an interdisciplinary group we might ask, therefore, how cultural constructions of the rural often ‘set the scene’ for crime fiction. For example It is obvious in the “noir” genre that an important (counter-) cultural current of strong, yet ambivalent representations of the rural runs throughout its landmark depictions of dark cities and hostile landscapes.

Idealised as the contrapuntic setting of an Idyllic, prelapsian, vision of community in culturally pessimistic tales of the criminal big city, or, on the contrary, mythified as a site of primal terror and unspeakable backwardness in “backwoods noir” fiction , the” rural” is an important horizon of the crime genre and all of its subgenres. It often sets the scene in modern, Scandinavian crime fiction; it informs the Geography of golden age mysteries, frequently set on big, remote, estates, on secluded islands and other cut-off locations. Even the mystery books of Enid Blyton, have children experiencing adventures ‘in’ the rural in a world away from adults; or gothic-inspired books and television series such as ‘Jamaica Inn’, where a brooding, rural backdrop provides an avenue into a darker, Cornish world. TV series recycle in imaginative ways such tropes, as evidenced in the recent Channel Four series ‘Glue’ where the not so idyllic aspects of rural teenage hood as rural ‘others’ are depicted thus drawing on Philo’s ‘Neglected Rural Others’. The rural idyll/anti idyll can be explored, for example, as within the backward, depraved world depicted in the U.S. film ‘Deliverance’, or ‘Cider House Rules’
The Symposium will provide a forum for concerted thinking around the ‘setting the scene’ theme and the relationships that might be explored. Thus the theme will not only offer an avenue for new readings into the canon of crime fiction and its satellites, from Conan Doyle to Faulkner, to Williams, to Upfield and D.O.A.; it can aid in thinking through conceptualizations and interdisciplinary collaborations. The Symposium will provide the opportunity to think through conceptualizations. The work of Raymond Williams (1973) might be usefully interrogated and the ways in which the country/city as counterpoint inform the development of narrative and plot; the spatial scales of the emotional, local, international within an increasing post-modern world and their manifestation in media culture might be discussed. Here, Bourdieu’s concepts such as those of Field and Habitus might also be fruitfully explored for the dominant norms and expressions presented in UK crime drama such as Midsummer Murders or Johnathan Creek, both set in and drawing on stereo-typical visions of rural locales’.
This conference will foreground the rural within crime and media culture. We could consider for example filmic representations of concepts of attachment and belonging to place. Here we might think about the Irish Film ‘The Field’, and how it depicts generational attachment to farming and the land through the crime embedded in the narrative. Or we might consider how crime fiction leads to the commodification and place-marketing of rural places via cultural planning and through, ‘trails’ taking the visitor through, the “crimes” of Robin Hood and his retreat into the Forest, stories of Highwaymen such as Dick Turpin, the Wild West, or more recently Scandinavian Crime fiction.
Thus the ‘Setting the Scene’ theme should be interpreted extensively within and beyond the themes mentioned. The Symposium provides an opportunity to tap into existing and new research ideas and develop exciting interdisciplinary research collaborations for the future.

English
If corollary of urbanization, many artists (writers, painters. . ) seized in the nineteenth century the city as object and scene of their reflection on a world under construction, it has not been the same for rural areas. It is clear that, unless exceptions, until relatively recently the countryside’s representations have been shaped by the writings of a ruling class (aristocracy and bourgeoisie); then the production conditions explain largely the symbolic appropriation of rural areas by various ideologies, including the regionalist literature, important in France (Henry Pourrat, Jean Giono, Marcel Pagnol filmography), but also well represented in other countries (eg José María de Pereda in Spain, or Patrice Lacombe in Canada, or Verga and Federigo Tozzi pour l’Italie).
Recent decades, however, beside the « country novels » that follow in line with the rustic current initiated in the nineteenth century and meet real popular success given the importance of printings, emerge productions more demanding. These writings often fed by a sense of loss and the end of a certain agricultural lifestyle (for France we can mention Miette by Pierre Bergounioux, Les Derniers Indiens by Marie-Hélène Lafon, Pays Perdu by Pierre Jourde. . . ) are also exploring the contemporary reconstructions of rural areas, little publicized (eg the graphic novels Rural and Les Ignorants by Etienne Davodeau or the documentary-film Profils Paysans by Raymond Depardon) and redefine a new ‘régionality’ (term as less militant and certainly less connoted in its nostalgic link to the land).
In this session we propose to revisit the rural areas and their representations in the contemporary writings (since the 1980s), in the popular and legitimate cultures in order to draw a global landscape of current countrysides. By ‘writings’ we mean literature in all its forms (novels, autobiographies, comics, children’s literature. . . ) but also audio-visual productions (fiction films, documentaries, TV series. . . ).
